It’s obvious that  navigating and keeping a good lookout is more difficult at night. Night training helps us to learn effective ways of working around this.

The river is a completely different place at night....

20111103-DSC_3538-650x435

...and it can be quite beautiful

Beginning the turn into Broughty Ferry Harbour taking the same line as we do in daylight - lining up the far corner of the slipway so that it appears in the middle of the harbour entrance.

Tied up using one spring and slow revs to keep the vessel tight alongside.

We think about going to the chip shop but we’re made of sterner stuff

and sail into the night again without pausing to eat.  Some of us are hungry.

Joel steering Marigot to the Lady Buoys. We think it is Joel anyway. We can’t see. To preserve night vision all unnecessary lights are switched off and the instruments are on their lowest illumination setting. We’re navigating by using two independant GPS systems and by correctly identifying and sighting on the buoys

After approaching the Lady Buoys, Bob decides that we’ve gone far enough and we turn back towards Broughty Harbour and Dundee.

Returning to Newport and passing under the Road Bridge. We always first position the vessel at 90 degrees to the bridge and then go through the centre of the navigation span.

Badger comes in

20111103-DSC_3742-650x435

Norman...Hand on hip and a halo.   We mutter darkly and look away.

Joel pretends to drive Badger but we all know that the wheel’s on the other side..!

Shut down on Marigot looking into the engine room. All done. A successful night’s training.

Did you know I almost copped it last night?     A couple of idiot boats nearly ran me over in the dark.
