Dario, a hungry cameraman with Rarelass Productions who are filming on the boats today receives a food bar from this unlikely source.

It just goes to show that’s it’s always worth carrying a camera.

Not quite sure what he’s done, Bob nonetheless seems delighted as all the cars parked at Broughty Harbour sound their horns, the sun breaks through the clouds and a chorus of heavenly trumpets is clearly heard above the cheering. Well done that man!.  .

The filming continues on board Marigot. .

The dolphins appear beyond the Horseshoe buoy on their way into the Tay following the tide.

There are a lot of new born calves in the pod now which is great news.

Sadly, on Thursday 27th a poor seal came ashore on the pebble beach at Broughty Ferry . Help was available from the Shanwell Wildlife Trust and the SSPCA but it was an old seal who just wanted peace.

bless it.

An RYA Powerboat Level 2 course for 7 of our member trainees took place on the 6th and 7th of August. The course was run by instructors Randall Christie and Peter Ritchie of the Dundee and Aberdeen Sea Cadet units.

20110806-DSC_8857-650x435

Congratulations to Elizabeth McKay, Kirsty Barclay, James Richmond, Neil MacKay, Peter Mungall, David Dyson and Joel Devereaux for passing the course and thanks to both Sea Cadet instructors.

20110806-DSC_8850-650x469

A Sea Cadets rib was used for the planing part of the course and Badger was used for the displacement craft  training.

Peter Ritchie introduces the weekend’s course aboard Badger at Broughty Ferry harbour

20110806-DSC_8860-650x435

..and off we go then...

20110806-DSC_8837-650x435

Peter’s not really trying to part the Red Sea, it’s a man overboard exercise and the trainees have to point to the casualty.

20110806-DSC_8873-650x435

Towing a vessel (and knowing how to rig the various ropes) is part of the course. After towing the rib, we change roles (and ropes) and then the rib tows Badger for a while

20110806-DSC_8883-650x434

Randall takes a quick break from the rib training and comes aboard Badger

With Saturday’s practical part of the course over - the weather turns wet but we all decide to go and look for fins anyway.

20110806-DSC_8895-650x406

We find them. Three dolphins are doing the highest jumps that I’ve ever seen...in exact circular arcs too, curving round and re-entering the water perfectly, nose first like an Olympic diver

Two baby ones in this photo

20110806-DSC_9025-650x432

The baby dolphins do look a bit Walt Disney.. They leave and re-enter the water with a quick “Plop” as distinct from the massive smooth grace of the adult animals

Randall gets photos from Badger’s foredeck.

20110806-DSC_9143-650x445

This large adult is repeatedly jumping in a peculiar way with an upturned head and fins held horizontally. This creates a particularly loud noise when it re-enters the water and makes a bigger splash than normal.

20110806-DSC_9145-650x461

We take this to be a gesture to “ask” us to back off, so we do.

20110806-DSC_9072-650x439

and then so did a baby one - is this copying or co-incidence? We leave this group alone

Dolphins! There they are.

20110726-DSC_8422-650x436

During one day on the 26th July when Badger was chartered for a 4 hour free ranging trip in the Tay, we possibly had the best sightings of dolphins that we’ve ever had.

20110726-DSC_8463-650x427

The photos from this trip are all on a special page on the website

The dolphins were all over the place, they were even inshore by Scotcraig Lighthouse - great for us to observe but also strong evidence that the Tay has developed into a thriving modern ecosystem in its own right.

....and Sparky was here too, swimming in a sandwich between mum and an aunty, as usual ....

Taymara is a charity run entirely by volunteers on a not for profit basis for the benefit of the local community.

We aim to provide a community boat service and maritime experience through sightseeing and dolphin watching trips which allow great opportunities to see the river and its wildlife as it should be seen - from the water!

In addition, we aim to provide sea training for individuals and vulnerable groups who might normally be excluded from this experience.
We also work closely with organisations who provide recovery and rehabilitation programmes which encompass drug and alchohol abuse.

(Taymara is registered in Scotland, Charity number SC039319. Company number SC334650)
