An RYA Powerboat Level 2 course for 7 of our member trainees took place on the 6th and 7th of August. The course was run by instructors Randall Christie and Peter Ritchie of the Dundee and Aberdeen Sea Cadet units.

Congratulations to Elizabeth McKay, Kirsty Barclay, James Richmond, Neil MacKay, Peter Mungall, David Dyson and Joel Devereaux for passing the course and thanks to both Sea Cadet instructors.

A Sea Cadets rib was used for the planing part of the course and Badger was used for the displacement craft training.

..and off we go then...
|
|
|
|
 |
|

|
Peter’s not really trying to part the Red Sea, it’s a man overboard exercise and the trainees have to point to the casualty.

Towing a vessel (and knowing how to rig the various ropes) is part of the course. After towing the rib, we change roles (and ropes) and then the rib tows Badger for a while

Randall takes a quick break from the rib training and comes aboard Badger

With Saturday’s practical part of the course over - the weather turns wet but we all decide to go and look for fins anyway.

We find them. Three dolphins are doing the highest jumps that I’ve ever seen...in exact circular arcs too, curving round and re-entering the water perfectly, nose first like an Olympic diver

The baby dolphins do look a bit Walt Disney.. They leave and re-enter the water with a quick “Plop” as distinct from the massive smooth grace of the adult animals

This large adult is repeatedly jumping in a peculiar way with an upturned head and fins held horizontally. This creates a particularly loud noise when it re-enters the water and makes a bigger splash than normal.

We take this to be a gesture to “ask” us to back off, so we do.

and then so did a baby one - is this copying or co-incidence? We leave this group alone

Dolphins! There they are.

During one day on the 26th July when Badger was chartered for a 4 hour free ranging trip in the Tay, we possibly had the best sightings of dolphins that we’ve ever had.

The dolphins were all over the place, they were even inshore by Scotcraig Lighthouse - great for us to observe but also strong evidence that the Tay has developed into a thriving modern ecosystem in its own right.

We aim to provide a community boat service and maritime experience through sightseeing and dolphin watching trips which allow great opportunities to see the river and its wildlife as it should be seen - from the water!
